Smith, Sir William Sidneyb. 1764; d. 1840Commonly known as Sir Sidney Smith. A British admiral, born in London; entered the navy in 1777, and was present at the action of Cape St Vincent in 1780 and Dominica in 1782. His most famous exploit was the defence of St Jean d'Acre in 1799.
