Shovell, Sir Cloudsley, or Clowdisleyb. circa 1650; d. 1707English admiral of the fleet, baptised at Cockthorpe, Norfolk; went to sea in 1664 under the care of Sir Christopher Mynns and later served with Sir John Narborough. In 1692 he played an important part in the defeat of the French at Barfleur, and in 1704 he assisted Sir George Rooke in the storming of Gibraltar. His ship was lost with all hands off the Scilly Isles.
