Southampton, Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl ofb. 1573; d. 1624English courtier, Shakespeare's patron. He succeeded his father, the 2nd Earl, in 1581, and studied at Cambridge and Gray's Inn. From 1590 he was prominent at court, and Shakespeare dedicated Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece to him. Southampton was involved in Essex's Irish conspiracy, and was sentenced to death. But the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment, and he was later freed and restored to royal favour by James I. He was actively involved in the Virginia and East India companies. Southampton died while serving against the Spaniards in the Netherlands.
