Scottish retainer, Queen
Victoria's personal servant, born at Crathie, Aberdeenshire, second of the
nine sons of a small farmer. In 1849 he became a gillie to Prince Albert and in
1858 he entered the Queen's service at Balmoral. For the last 19 years of his
life he was her personal attendant and confidant.
