Venice 1643He was resident at the court of Mantua for eleven years from 1592 where he composed Orfeo which many consider to be the turning point in the early development of opera. His reputation was further enhanced in 1608 with the production of his next opera Arianna. From 1613 he was director of music at St. Marks, Venice where in 1642 he composed The Coronation of Poppaea.
