Offa, King of Merciar. 757-796He succeeded Ethelbald, and by the time he died had re-established Mercian supremacy in southern England, the King of Wessex being his dependent, and his influence extending into Northumbria. From 784 to 796 Offa had numerous contacts with Europe, negotiating as an equal with Charlemagne. Offa secured the creation of a third English archbishopric at Lichfield (787), in an effort to consolidate Mercian ascendancy even in the ecclesiastical field.
