Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, king of Gwynedd and Powys 1039-63

d. 1063

Gruffydd created his dominion in battle, winning the kingdoms of Gwynedd and Powys in 1039 and Deheubarth between 1040 and 1055. He married the daughter of Earl Aelfgar of Mercia and was allied to that earldom at times. His many struggles with Harold Godwinson eventually led to his death, for after fleeing Harold's attack on his court at Rhuddlan (1062) he was killed by his own men (1063).
