Edmund I, king of Englandb. 922; d.946He succeeded to the throne in 940, but had already played a prominent part in the battles of the previous reign. In 940 Edmund was forced to cede land approximating to the modern counties of Lincolnshire, Derby, Nottinghamshire, and Leicester to Olaf Guthfrithson, but regained these two years later, recovered York, and in 945 ravaged Strathclyde. He was killed by a criminal who had been previously banished from the court.
