He encouraged the spread of learning, began the Sistine Chapel and the Sistine Bridge, and was a patron of all the arts. He was involved in a conspiracy against the Medici which resulted in a war with Florence (1478) and urged the Venetians to attack Ferrara and then abandoned them.
