Simeon Stylites, St.b. 390; d. 459(From the Greek stulos, pillar). A Christian monk of Syria in the 5th century. He is reputed to have spent the last 37 years of his life on a pillar, 20 m high and 1 m wide at the top, erected near Antioch. He preached by day, and crowds of pilgrims flocked to receive his exhortations. His feast is on 5 January.
