Sisley, Alfredb 1839; d 1899A landscape painter of English parentage, born in Paris. He became acquainted with Monet and Renoir in the studio of the classical painter Gleyre. Sisley was a member of the Impressionist group, and his work shows the influence of the light-effects of Monet. He settled in Moret-sur-Loing but visited England in 1871 and 1874. He is known as one of the purest Impressionists. Well known works include The Square at Argenteuil 1872 (Louvre) and The Canal, 1872 (Louvre).
