New Model Army

The New Model Army was created by Parliament early in 1645. The armies of the Earl of Essex, the Earl of Manchester, and Sir William Waller were reorganised as a single force under Sir Thomas Fairfax as commander in Chief. Oliver Cromwell held the position of lieutenant-general but he was the driving force behind the purging of the two aristocratic generals Essex and Manchester. Its first success was the battle of Naseby, and it was the chief military instrument of the Parliamentary victory in the Civil War.
