JanissariesThe Janissaries were a renowned force of Turkish soldiery, established in the 14th century. Until about 1600 they were composed of forced levies of Christian youths, to whom were added young captives taken in war. Trained under a discipline both military and monastic, they were taught to look upon the corps as their only home and for centuries they represented the very best of the Ottoman troops. They received no pay except during wartime and were allowed to work at trades and to act as police. They frequently mutinied and in 1826 a final revolt at Constantinople resulted in their annihilation.
