ShogunAn abbreviation of Seiitaishogun, which was the highest rank of the Japanese Samurai or warrior class, originally meaning 'Grand General for Conquering Ainus and other Tribes'. From 1192, when Minamoto no Yoritomo was made the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate government, until 1867, when Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate government, restored to the emperor the reins of national government, the shogun was in reality the ruler of Japan, although the emperor retained nominal supremacy.
