FealtyFrom the French word for faith, foi. In medieval times an oath of fealty was often demanded by those in authority from those who were subject to them; most notably kings required it of the nobility. The oath, which acted to strengthen the social hierarchy of the time, could be made even when the subject held no lands of the lord and required no reciprocal promise from the lord to the subject. In this regard, it differed from the lesser obligation to pay homage.
