Whitby, Synod of, or Council of Whitby664 CEConvened by Oswy, King of Northumbria, to decide whether to follow Celtic or Roman church practices, which diverged in many doctrinal matters, including the date of Easter. The Roman party was represented by St Wilfrid and the Celtic by Bishop Colman. Oswy's decision for Rome, which was quickly followed by the other English kingdoms, brought the English Church into close contact with continental Europe and linked it fully with the main line of development of the Church in western Europe.
