Rorke's Drift, Battle of22-23 January 187945 km from Dundee, Natal, South Africa, on the Tugela River. The site of a battle in the Zulu War when 139 British soldiers guarding a ford on the river were attacked by 3-4,000 Zulus. Heroic defence and better firepower eventually repulsed the attackers, who withdrew from the battlefield at dawn on 23 January. 8 Victoria Crosses were awarded as a result of the engagement.
