Isandhlwana, Battle of22 January 1879On this isolated hill in Natal, South Africa, the first engagement of the 1879 Zulu War took place. Colonel Durnford's column of 800 British troops together with as many Natal levies, part of an invasion force of Zululand, were almost completely annihilated by 20,000 Zulus under Cetewayo.
