Treaties of Brest-Litovsk

3 March 1918

These peace treaties were made between the Central Powers and the Ukraine and Soviet Russia and they reflect the relative weakness of the new Soviet state in Russia and its desire for a quick end to the war with Germany. Ukrainian independence was agreed in the first treaty, and in the second Russia lost its territory in Poland and the Baltic states. In all, Russia was to lose about one-third of its population and industry.

Following the defeat of Germany and Austria-Hungary the treaty was repealed.
