Act of SupremacyThere were two English acts of this name. That of 1534 declared that the King (Henry VIII) was the supreme head of the Church of England, and was repealed by Queen Mary in 1554; that of 1559 declared that the Queen (Elizabeth I) was the supreme governor of the Church of England. The change in title from 'head' to 'governor' marked one of Elizabeth's compromises and implied in theory, if not in fact, a lessening of the Crown's personal control in favour of that of the Crown in Parliament.
